Field Trips
Colloquium field trips give students the opportunity to explore various aspects of biology that cannot be experienced during the small group trips due to time, distance, or limited accommodations. Along with the educational experience, field trips provide students with the opportunity to establish social interactions extending from the small groups to the entire class. Shorter trips usually occur on weekends, and last anywhere from half a day to an entire weekend. Students are welcome to bring non-Colloquium friends. Field trip destinations in the past have included Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area to view thousands of sandhill cranes, the U of I School of Veterinary Medicine, the Indiana Dunes, the Morton Arboretum, Starved Rock State Park and various industrial laboratories.
In the middle of October during the fall semester, BCQ takes a weekend trip to Saukville, Wisconsin. During this time BCQ students and UIC faculty get to know each other more around a campfire and other activities. In 2016, Marisa Rubalcava created a video which describes some of the activities done on the trip: Click here to watch the video!
At the end of the spring semester, a big trip takes Colloquium students to a national park or a biological field station. This trip usually lasts a week and in the past has been a great source of learning and entertainment. Past end-of-the-year field trips have included Hancock Biological Station in Kentucky, Reis Biological Station in Missouri, Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, and Mountain Lake Biological Station in Virginia.
